SEO Writing Tips: What Actually Works in 2026

Modern SEO writing isn't about keyword stuffing. Here's what does work — and the free tools that make it faster.

The 2026 SEO reality

Search engines have gotten better at recognising helpful content and worse at rewarding tricks. Old-school keyword stuffing, thin AI-generated pages and doorway posts all get filtered.

What replaces them isn't magic — it's boring craft: a clear headline, a genuinely useful answer, honest structure and enough depth to satisfy the query.

Keyword usage without stuffing

Use your primary keyword in the H1, the URL slug, the first paragraph, at least one H2, and the meta description. That's usually enough. The Keyword Density Checker helps you spot accidental over-use — anything over 3% for a single term looks unnatural.

Structure signals to search engines

Search engines read your H1, H2 and H3 headings to understand a page. Use them in order (no skipping H2 for H3), keep them descriptive, and put the primary keyword in the H1 and at least one H2.

Meta title and description

The meta title is your ad in the search result. Under 60 characters, keyword near the front, brand at the end. The meta description should be under 155 characters and pitch the click, not summarise the page. Use the Character Counter to keep both inside the limits.

Internal linking

Every new post should link to two or three older posts on the same topic, and older posts should be updated to link to the new one. This tells search engines you have topical depth.

Frequently asked questions

What's the ideal keyword density?
Between 0.5% and 2% for your primary term. Higher looks unnatural; lower risks the page being classed as off-topic.
Do I need long-form content to rank?
Long-form ranks better for informational queries because it can cover the topic in depth. For transactional queries, shorter pages often win.
How long until SEO changes show results?
Weeks for existing pages, months for new pages. Set expectations accordingly and don't chase daily fluctuations.
