Paragraph Counter Explained: Structure Your Writing Better

Why paragraph count is one of the most useful readability signals — and how to use it to write pages people actually read.

What counts as a paragraph

The Paragraph Counter treats a paragraph as any block of text separated from another block by one or more blank lines. That's the same convention Markdown, HTML source and most writing platforms use.

Why paragraph count matters

Scannable pages have lots of short paragraphs. Dense academic pages have fewer, longer ones. Neither is objectively better, but the count tells you which category your page is in — and whether that matches the reader you're writing for.

For web writing, aim for paragraphs of 2–4 sentences. On mobile, that's about 3–5 lines of text. Longer paragraphs get skipped.

Using the counter to restructure

A quick trick: divide your word count by your paragraph count. If the answer is under 40, your paragraphs may be too short and the piece will feel choppy. Over 100 and they're probably too long for the web. Between 60 and 90 is the sweet spot for most blog and marketing content.

Frequently asked questions

Are lists counted as paragraphs?
A bulleted list separated by blank lines counts as one paragraph. Individual list items are not counted separately.
Does it count headings?
Headings that sit on their own line surrounded by blank lines are counted as paragraphs. Filter them out mentally when comparing to a target.
What's a healthy paragraph count for a 1,000-word post?
10–20 paragraphs is comfortable for the web. Fewer than 8 and it will feel dense; more than 25 and it will feel fragmented.
